Spring Delegates Meeting 2007

Although called delegates meetings, the meetings are open to all members and even the general public. Only delegates may vote on Trail Conference issues, but these are typically a very small part of the meeting. Generally there is a focus presentation which should be of interest to a wide spectrum of the hiking community.

You are invited to New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Delegates' meeting on June 14, 2007 at Ross Dock in Fort Lee, NJ. This meeting will feature Jim Hall, the Executive Director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC). Prior to his appointment this year, he was Deputy Executive Director

PIPC is a bi-state organization overseeing public lands in New York and New Jersey that together comprise the Palisades park system. In 1900 the two state legislatures created PIPC. The interstate agreement was forged in an effort to preserve the natural landscape of the Palisades region for future generations, and the commission set about acquiring land along the river for public parks. Founded in 1900 the Palisades park system includes twenty-four parks and eight historic sites, covering over 100,000 acres in eight counties (Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Warren in New Jersey, and Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, and Webster in New York.). The park system has a wide variety of recreational facilities, museums, and nature centers, and hosts nine million visitors a year. Parklands stretch for over twenty miles along the western banks of the Hudson River, with multiple sites for public access to the waterfront and several boat docks.

The program starts at 7:00 pm. Please join us for a social hour, beginning at 6:00 pm, for a chance to share refreshments and chat with hiking club representatives. A business meeting and announcement of the Member Get A Member prizes will follow Jim’s presentation.

Directions to Ross Dock

From Routes 4, 46, I-80, I-95: Take the exit for Fort Lee / Palisades Interstate Parkway. Continue straight on Bridge Plaza South past several traffic lights. At the last light ("T" intersection), turn right onto Bigler St. At the stop sign, turn left (east) onto Main St., then keep in the right lane to bear right (south) at River Road. The southern park entrance will be on the left. Follow Henry Hudson Drive about one mile to the Ross Dock circle and follow signs.

From the Palisades Interstate Parkway ( southbound): Take the last exit before the George Washington Bridge (Hudson Terrace). Turn left onto Hudson Terrace. Go south and at the second traffic light keep in the left lane to bear right onto Bigler St. At the stop sign, turn left (east) on Main St., then keep in the right lane to bear right (south) at River Road. The southern park entrance ( Henry Hudson Drive) will be on the left. Follow Henry Hudson Drive about one mile to the Ross Dock circle and follow signs.

From U.S. Route 9W: At Main St., Fort Lee, turn east (right if headed north, left if headed south). Proceed downhill and bear right (south) at River Rd. The southern park entrance ( Henry Hudson Drive) will be on the left. Follow Henry Hudson Drive about one mile to the Ross Dock circle and follow signs.

From Edgewater & South: Take River Rd. north . Near the top of the hill, at the Fort Lee border, is the southern park entrance ( Henry Hudson Drive) on the right. Follow Henry Hudson Drive about one mile to the Ross Dock circle and follow signs.

From New York City: Take the upper level of the George Washington Bridge to the first Fort Lee exit. Bear right and proceed down the ramp to the traffic light. Proceed south (right turn) to the second traffic light, then keep in the left lane to bear right onto Bigler St. At the stop sign, turn left (east) on Main St., then keep in the right lane to bear right (south) at River Road. The southern park entrance ( Henry Hudson Drive) will be on the left. Follow Henry Hudson Drive about one mile to the Ross Dock circle and follow signs.
