HIGHLANDS PRESERVATION ACTION ALERT
The USDA/Forest Service has released a draft report of
the New York/New Jersey Highlands Regional Study. Two public
involvement sessions are scheduled for next week. The New York-New
Jersey Trail Conference urges you to attend and spread the word to
others. (Please post this flyer.) Express your concerns and
commendations regarding the report's conclusions.

- The Forest Service study focuses on 1.5 million acres of our
Highlands.
- The rate of development in the region has increased to nearly
5,200 acres/year and the rate of forest loss has quadrupled from
830 to 3,400 acres/year.
- The population of 20 Highlands municipalities grew more than 20%
between 1995/2000.
- The amount of core interior habitat has decreased by 65,000
acres - over 100 square miles - since 1984.
- Nearly 300,000 acres (77%) of the high value water resource
lands are unprotected.
- 60% (328,565 acres) of high value biodiversity lands are
unprotected.
