Park Description:

The Jersey Shore is not just resorts thriving on sandy beaches. It is also associated with lighthouses, historic villages, and wildlife migrations. It is because of New Jersey’s long connection with the sea that, in 1988, Congress established the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route. The National Park Service, the State of New Jersey, The New Jersey Pinelands Commission and many other organizations are working together to provide for public appreciation, education, understanding, and enjoyment of natural and cultural sites along the coast. Five themes – maritime history, coastal habitats, wildlife migration, historic settlements, and relaxation and inspiration – focus on the various aspects of coastal life.

Trails Overview:

Although The New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route is designed for vehicular touring, it connects areas of interest to hikers.  In addition to the five themes, The Coastal Heritage Trail is divided into five regions, linked by the common heritage of life on the Jersey Shore and the Raritan and Delaware bays.

To plan a tour-hike a good place to start is with overview maps of the 300 mile vehicular trail and its regions.  Then, from the park's home page [Contact Information below], find specific destinations in each of the regions by following the "Trail Regions" quicklink.  Nearly all of the New Jersey State Park destinations as well as many of the county parks are listed alphabetically in our Find a Park database.  Scroll down to the one you seek for a park and trails overview.
