In the 1800s the Katrina Falls section of the Neversink gorge was home to a logging community of about thirty families. Notorious as a wild place of mystery and bear hunters, it also housed small farms, a vineyard, and the 'very fine home' of the local lumber baron. After the gorge was stripped of its white pine for lumber and hemlock trees for tanneries, most families moved away, and the land came under the protection of wealthy conservationists. The remaining structures were leveled, and the district of Hackledam, besides a failed plan in the 1920s to create a hydroelectric dam on the river, was forgotten.
