Hemlock trees provide habitat and food for hundreds of forest species including birds, mammals, and arthropods. Winter is the best time of the year to search for an invasive tree pest that is killing hemlock trees called hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). In the winter, HWA forms white woolly masses around their bodies that can be seen along branches where the needles connect. We need your help monitoring the spread of this invasive species!
From February 1st – March 15th, NY iMapInvasives and the New York State Hemlock Initiative are hosting NY’s second statewide Winter Mapping Challenge! Top reporters will be eligible for prizes and other exciting incentives - plus ALL reporters will help us better understand and manage this invasive species. |
