Scenic land pulled off tax sale

DEERPARK - A 129-acre parcel of scenic land bordered by the Deerpark Ridge and Neversink River has been saved from the Orange County tax sale.

County Executive Edward Diana told Orange County Land Trust Executive Director James Delaune the property would be taken off the tax sale auction because of its aesthetic value.

Delaune Monday said the effort to preserve the land in its natural state was a joint one.

"The Orange County Land Trust was approached by the New York-New Jersey Trail conference to try and work together to protect this parcel," he said. "So, in fact, the Land Trust, the Trails Conference and the Nature Conservancy along with county government came together to pull this parcel off the county's in rem tax auction list."

Delaune said the Nature Conservancy has committed to paying the $15,000 in back taxes.
